Es especie de ave coraciforme, de la familia Upupidae. del mismo orden de los abejarucos, martines pescadores y de las carracas. Casi siempre andarinas por el suelo, en busca de insectos, larvas, lombrices, escarabajos y gran depredador de la procesionaria del pino. Su canto característico tres veces repetido: up up up. Anidan sobre todo en huecos de arboles. Son migradoras, aunque por Badajoz se les ve ultimamente en pleno invierno.
